The Day's Harvest

Today's harvest is...

Tomatoes
Serrano Peppers
Basil & Thyme

The 1st thing is to spend several hours
out in the garden during the early morning hours.
That's the best time to harvest herbs.

The air is cool and the scent of herbs fill your senses...
there's really nothing so good as the scent of
fresh cut Basil and Thyme!

I cut, wash and put them into a bucket with a little water
in the bottom to perk them up,
and to allow the leaves to dry off a little.

While the herbs sit and dry,
I picked the tomatoes and peppers

Later in the morning
I load the food dehydrator with the booty!

For a couple of days my house will smell like...

Spaghetti Sauce!

Are you harvesting anything?
What do you do with the harvest?

(:

  2. all we have left are tomatoes and peppers, those have to get picked today. if we yield enough tomatoes i will possibly make and freeze more salsa. providing my husband goes to the store to get the rest of the ingredients (and considering he loved the last batch of salsa, i'm going to guess it might not be hard to convince him to go for me).

  3. Dear Vicki,

You are truly a gardener and family gal…I adore that about you. Your photography of the family is beautiful as always as is the harvest crop and I just couldn’t get over the gorgeous family bible you inherited; truly a family heirloom and the leaf, let it be. I think it just makes it more special and intriguing.
For the first time this year I have grown Lemon grass…so beautifully scented and Karson our cat thinks so too! I tried cooking it in the chicken broth but after reading your post I think I messed up.
I also grew Lemon Verbena, Pineapple Sage,Thyme, Creeping Rosemary, Lavender, Oregano, Lettuce Basil, and English Mint. I haven’t harvested as yet and need to read up on how to do so. I better get busy in the next few days because it is getting quite cold over here.
The sunflowers are always grown here for two purposes, foremost the birds of course and secondly for their architectural beauty in the snow and frost. Sorry to say none of the seeds I planted this year grew with the exception of a couple stringy ones but amazingly one grew where we lay Elliot last November…a Christmas shaped like tree covered in a profusion of flower heads grew at Elliot’s grave and I didn’t even plant it. I think Elly gave us a Summer Christmas gift a “Sunflower Christmas Tree” to thank us for placing a Christmas tree at his grave last Christmas. Sunflowers are just Magical!
